{Palmieri Family} Fun Family Winter-Fall Photo Session | Family Pictures in Elk River | Minneapolis Family Photographer

Hi again, everyone!

Let me begin by saying that I am seriously the luckiest photographer in the world. My clients are always so wonderful to work with. That's true of my session with the Palmieri family, too!

The Palmieri family consists of Joe and Kristin, with Ashley, Ava and Joseph. They love to travel and camp together and always enjoy fun family time!

We set up the session for the last Sunday in October. Who would’ve thought that we would get some snow on Saturday night!  We talked in the morning and I asked Kristin if she wanted to cancel. It was chilly, in the 20’s, but no too bad for Minnesota standards. Since all of our upcoming schedules were difficult, not to mention the fact we were heading into November, we decided to go for it.

We were so happy we did!  Location, Location, Location!  I have to say it was pretty amazing! Along with the snow, and of course the wonderful family, this all made for some beautiful photos!

I met up with the Palmieri's at a southern corner of Woodland Trails Park in Elk River, the entrance being down the block from their neighborhood. I absolutely love this park for winter sessions.

The outfits Kristin chose for the session were casual, and she tried to make them coordinate colors and patterns so they didnt distract. She also was going for a warm, cozy feeling.  She did a great job!

When I asked Kristin to tell me their favorite parts of their session and why they enjoyed it so much, she responded with, "We enjoyed our session because it was near our house and we love Woodland Trails, so it was nice to capture the trail we use so often as a background for our shoot, plus the snow added a beautiful backdrop!"

While the location and snow were great, it was the Palmieri family that made this shoot such a treat!

I could only hope that there is a snow storm before all of my family sessions!  One can dream, can't they?

The Dead of Winter | Minnesota Portrait and Fine Art Photography

Minnesota. Gotta love it.....Or do we?  Some of us do, and there are those who don't.  I do. I love the seasons. Fall is my favorite, with winter a close second. Spring comes in at #3, and dead last is summer.  What?  Summer is last?  Yes.  Don't get me wrong, I like summer. But the heat of summer kills me. For whatever reason, I melt in the summer. The 90+ humid days, hot sun and the bugs. Oh for the bugs. I enjoy the green landscape and the beautiful sunsets, but the heat is unbearable. Give me a nice winter day in place of it and I'm a happy camper.  HOWEVER, there is a limit to what I can even bear. And that is the frigid cold temps that we have had the last couple of weeks. I love the snow, but you can have the below 0 temps.

At any rate, you can imagine how difficult it is being a portrait photographer in Minnesota without a studio. Although I personally love winter portraits, not everyone can be convinced to brave the frigid temps. So what do I do in the dead of winter?

First of all, I do have two other jobs. HA. I have to support us somehow. But right now I am working on bettering my business.  I am in the middle of taking two online photography courses, Real Estate and Fresh 48. Not sure if either are something I want to get into, but in my "down time", I can freshen my skills up a bit. I have taken part in several webinars on business management, web presence, SEO, posing, printing, pricing and anything else you can imagine. I am playing "catch up" with my blogging and social media accounts. I am updating my website and implementing a new brand with my marketing materials.  It seems I have had a hodge podge mix of brochures, ads, etc. I want to create a uniform look. I am gearing up to start booking for this senior season and working on a new newsletter system.  And confound it, I WILL figure out this social media algorithm thingy. It sounds like Facebook does not bode well for us small business owners this year.

I finally launched my fine art print store that I have been promising for years. That has been a huge undertaking and I am so glad that it's done. As time permits, I will be adding new content often.

I have a few senior winter shoots  coming up, along with a couple of corporate headshots. I have also had fun taking some dance competition photos of my daughter's former high school teammates and a cheerleading competition. Needless to say, just because I'm not shooting 24/7 doesn't mean that I have been lax in my duties.

Aside from all of that, I have been trying to keep warm in the frigid temps with my daughter; playing with my two cats, Charlie and Chloe, watching my Minnesota Vikings win their division, and planning some personal projects as well.

Right now, I am working on my taxes. Oy. Need I say more?

Year in Review | Elk River, Minnesota Portrait Photographer

2017 was good to From Moments to Memories. So many awesome sessions and clients! I truly am so lucky to have worked with so many beautiful people. I have never dedicated so much time to my business as I did in 2017. At the end of 2016, I graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Web and Multimedia Design to add to my bag of tricks.

I spent endless hours editing photos, many mornings watching the sun rise. I worked almost every weekend, watched countless training videos and learned more about what I can offer my clients. I implemented a new management system and pricing structure to streamline my workflow, making things so much simpler for my clients. (And lets be honest, myself.)

Too many good things happened in 2017 I can't even list them all!  I was featured on the "Snap Society Featured Photographer" blog, made the 2017 Top Pro list from Thumbtack, and was voted Best Photographer in the Elk River Star News (my local newspaper) 2018 Reader's Choice Awards. I FINALLY started selling my nature, still life and other "non-portrait" images. This has been a goal of mine for at least five years. It has been a long time coming!  I also started offering lifestyle family and newborn sessions, which have been super fun for me!

My plan is to continue to come up with fun, creative sessions for my seniors and families, while continuing to grow and learn. I am looking forward to a great 2018! Thank you all for helping to make this happen!

Happy New Year!

{Bergerson Family} Amazingly Fun Family Session | Minneapolis Family Pictures

Hi again, everyone!

I know I have said this before, but I will say it again!  I am seriously the luckiest photographer around. My clients are always so fabulous  to work with. That's true of my session with the Bergerson Family as well!

Rogers, Minnesota Family Photos

The Bergerson's consist of Mark, Breanne and adorable Connor, who just turned ONE!  Mark and Breanne are also officially expecting a little lady to join their young family at the end of August.  Yes! Connor is going to be a big brother! They are counting down the days until the cute little bundle is welcomed into our world!

Breanne contacted me looking for a combination Family/Maternity/1-year session.  She had some concerns, as the last time she had her maternity and newborn photos done, she was less than impressed.  After she filled out her family questionnaire, we talked about what she liked and what she didn't like about her last session. We chatted up to the session date about her expecations, as I wanted to make sure they were happy with their end results!

I met up with them late afternoon at Henry's Woods Park in Rogers, and the weather was perfect for photo-taking. Breanne liked the the park because it had two distinct features that give a feeling of where they both came from.  The dense woods are reminiscent of Mark's upbringing in the North Woods and the red barn is reminiscent of Breanne's in Illinois's farm country.

It was a little humid (not to mention the mosquitos) but they were troopers! It was the family that made this shoot such a blast!  My daughter, Baylee, came along to assist as she sometimes does. She was a big help!

I did a few family photos, then we went on to do a couple of Connor alone to celebrate his first birthday!  Breanne brought a "Where the Wild Things Are" book for him to share with us!  He is such a flirt, and made my job easy! So full of smiles and laughter!

Breanne wanted to get a few photos of just her and Mark, so Baylee entertained Connor for a while. He enjoyed hanging out with her while I took some couple portraits, and a few of Breanne alone.

Breanne's words of wisdom for other families preparing for a family session?  "Communication is key.  Let the photographer know exactly what you want.  Get your partner in on the decision making.  Not only can your partner provide great ideas, but being involved helps them know what to expect, from poses to props."  For more tips on how to prepare for YOUR family session stress-free, check out my blog post about it here.

Both Baylee and I had so much fun with this family!  I asked Breanne to relate her favorite parts of the session, and why she enjoyed it.  Her response, "Sheila and her lovely assistant were easy going and friendly, making them a joy to work with.  I loved that Sheila showed us some of the shots she had taken as we went along, and gave great direction during posing. And Baylee was amazing with Connor!"

Aww..Thanks, Breanne and Mark, your beautiful young family was a joy to work with, and I can't wait to work with you again! (It's going to be sooner than you think, but it's a secret - stay tuned!)
